The Simpsons first appeared April 19th, 1987 on the Tracey Ullman Show.  In the beginning the show was only a few 30 second shorts but eventually a regular series would be born.  On December 17th, 1989 "Simpsons Roasting Over An Open Fire" ,The Simpsons very first episode, was aired.  Sure the characters were crude back then and maybe the voices were different.  It was the start.

Seasons 2-5 were broadcast in the 8pm slot on Thursdays.  It wasn't until season 6 did the show go back to the time slot it has always dominated.

They grew bigger than Matt Groening (creator) could have ever imagined and with all big TV shows comes merchandise, and lots of it.  Everything from Bart boxer shorts to Homer's Cinnamon Donut Cereal has come out over the years along with action figures of nearly every character on The Simpsons.  The show got so big, infact, it spawned a platinum album titled "The Simpsons Sing the Blues."  The Simpsons also put out "Go Simpsonic" in 1999.

As far as awards go, The Simpsons have had their fair share, with 18 Emmy Awards, 37 Emmy Nominations, eight Annie Awards, three Genesis Awards, three International Monitor Awards, a Peabody Award and numerous more awards. They even have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Time Magazine has been called The Simpsons the TV show of the 20th century. The show's 250 episodes have made it the longest running animated prime-time show, even surpassing The Flintstones.  And so the show will continue to live well on into the 21st century, FOX is releasing each of the seasons on DVDs.  The Simpsons have and will continue to shape the face of television.
